Hi I am trying to sort out my friends GS 500 it has been very neglected left outside in all weathers its his first bike and I’m having trouble with the motor cutting out when releasing the clutch
there is no side stand switch
no clutch lever switch
once I had drained the tank of H2O changed the battery cleaned plugs and fresh fuel in the bike started and runs very smoothly
behind the clutch cable case there is a black wire connected to a sensor ?
(black plastic round shaped) screwed to the main engine case I cut this wire and the bike was dead I reconnected it and the bike is normal as in starting can I isolate this wire to over ride the safety cut out ?February 2, 2017 at 4:15 pm #3739LewisModerator
Sounds like a short somewhere but I’m honestly not the best at electrics. I’ll see if one of the lads can jump on the forum and help you out mate.February 2, 2017 at 4:27 pm #3740Phill WoodModerator
You should have an engine cutout switch on the side stand. If this is not present the engine will cutout every time you let the clutch out. trace the wiring under the engine and jump the two connections.

thanks for the input Woodie there is no wire under the engine the whole loom has been “modified” so I think I will have to start unravelling the loom and hopefully identify the rouge wires as we can prove that the cut out circuit is still reading from the “removed” sidestand switchFebruary 3, 2017 at 8:41 am #3745Anonymous
as above Lewis I will look for those “minx” wires thanks for respondingFebruary 5, 2017 at 3:50 pm #3748Gl0ckageKeymaster
The wire that goes into the side stand is a black and green wire. It connects with a small black connector.
If thats not there then you need to find the part of the loom which is black and green. on the right side of the bike.
Also some bikes have a clutch kill switch on the clutch itself. Just short these wires.
Post some pictures and we can have a lookie 🙂
And welcome to the forum!February 7, 2017 at 11:51 am #3750Anonymous
Hi G10ckage I have found a green wire loose/unconnected but no black so far I am unravelling the loom of tape/insulation so I hope to find a stray black wire
thanks for your input……………to be continuedFebruary 18, 2017 at 2:08 pm #3752Gl0ckageKeymaster
